Reparations are a horrible idea. The people that were harmed are dead. Why should my tax dollars go to something that no one alive contributed to or is directly affected by.
It depends on what kind of reparations we are looking at. I am assuming we are talking slavery reparations.
There has been some talk of an estimated amount based on wages earned at the time by enslaved people (I have heard somewhere around 1.4 Trillion) In that case it would be a class action lawsuit that would go to one whole group (and the lawyers would see a BIG part of that). If it is ordering individulas to pay a few thousand or even hundred dollars, then lawyers would see less, and even none depending on what teh arrangement is. Some might see this as a good chance for probono work or something along those lines. Others might be part of organizations seeking reparations. Either way, the person would see more of the money on that end. It really depends on what people wish to seek.
There are arguments on both sides. One is that the government owes money because they have admitted on more than one occasion that they were in the wrong AND reparations were paid to Japanese detainees after world war II.
On the other side, it is essentially asking someone today to pay for something to pay for something a distant relation did before they were even born. Obviously, some people are not going to be wild about the idea.

I do disagree with reparations, but I think instead of paying money, we should contribute to society in a way that will help eventually erase the scars of slavery and even the playing field for African Americans.
it would be no help. how would anyone establish who descended from slave or owner? would descendants of black slave owners be required to pay reparations?
The reparations that I would like to see would involve fixing all the terrible schools that are in black neighborhoods and making them operate well. They should be well-maintained, look nice, have good teachers, plenty of supplies, and enough security so that their aren’t gangs hanging out front. That would do a lot more for society than paying money to individuals. But, yes, the lawyers would get the green. I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for reparations, I don’t think it’s going to happen. If it did, the resentment against blacks in this country would be so enormous that I think a lot of people would be hurt personally, either by getting fired from their jobs, or some people would be beaten up and possibly killed. Not good.
