Any “average” is meaningless; it depends upon your damages. If you are not willing to accept the insurance company’s offer, figure it will take you 3 to 5 years to collect and make alternate plans for survival until then.
It really varies depending on your bills, any physical harm and future problems of disability, pain, suffering. There are companies out there now that will give you money to live on while your case is being held up, if you win the case they get paid back with interest, if you lose you owe nothing.
Lawsuits take a long time and insurance companies try to make them drawn out as long as possible so you will settle.
The award will depend on bills, injury, pain, earning capacity lost and future ability to earn money if injured. So many things it is hard to tell you.
Hang in there, they have to pay you for everything eventually.
Believe me, if you want a fast settlement, tell your lawyer that you want what the insurance company will offer.
Just remember that you get one chance to make a claim on this accident. In 10 years, when you are in significant pain, there will be no additional money awarded.
My wife was seriously injured in a car accident 7 years ago, and we just settled 6 months ago. It is now that we are able to understand the full extent of her injuries, and were able to make a proper claim. The insurance company offered her $10,000 at first, but the final settlement is many many times that.
