Received money settlement due to a car accident, Are there any age restrictions for getting the money?

The Insurance company (Geico) Sent the check to my lawyer, I am not yet 18, Is that going to cause a problem with withdrawing the money? I live in NY.
Yes, My parents said the Lawyer told them that i need to be 18 in order to get the check.

    It shouldn’t unless you are under your parents insurance coverage. Then the check, after fees are taken by the lawyer, would probably be given to them. This MAY be covered under State laws.

    It is probable that, because you are a minor, the money will be held in trust for you or be spent for your medical care by your parent or guardian.

    When you DO get it, take very careful care of it, because when it’s gone, it’s gone!

    Usually, if the recipient is a minor, the settlement is put into a trust and a trustee is appointed to supervise the account. Since the check went to your lawyer, you need to contact him about the disbursement of the money according to NY laws.

    Are you sure that your attorney received the settlement check? In NY, a judge has to approve any minor claimant’s settlement. Usually, the money is placed in an escrow account(in a selected bank) until you reach the age of 18. If this was not done, then the check was made out to your Parents, as guardians, and your name.
