What can I do about my former lawyer?
In 2002 I had an accident claim. The lawyer & doctor had this deal that the lawyer would take her cut & the doctor’s cut (pay him directly), then I’d get the rest of the settlement. Lawyer never gave me proof of payment. Last year I was contacted by collections for this balance. After several calls, my lawyer said she’d handle it & I asked for the copy of a cashed check again, which never came. Last month I was denied credit, got a copy of my report, this $4500 bill is on it.
For over a month my lawyer has refused to speak with me. I’ve spoke with 2 paralegals who give me different answers about getting a copy of this. One said it was ordered & would be in within 2 weeks, 3 weeks later another tells me it was never ordered. Collections has told me she contacted them last year & would send the copy of a cashed check, which she never did. Now I’m lost at what to do. I’m convinced it was never paid. Is there anything I can do besides filing a complaint with the board?
Thanks.
Wanted to add I’m aware how dumb it was to work with a lawyer who worked directed with a doctor…in my defense I was 19 at the time & my father had me convinced it would work out better that way. I’m totally aware what an idiot I was & that I didn’t help the situation at all, but I’m trying to dig my way out of this mess now. Thanks again.

Yea get another lawyer and tell them what you just told us, then the new lawyer will prolly tell you that youneed to sue the previous lawyer to get your money and some more for the credit damages. I think that is exactly what you should do because I have had to do the same thing before just make sure that you get everything in order, and also the collections agency will be on your side about this thing, because they just want their money.
Most likely if you just tell your lawyer that you are seeking new council and are planning to take her to court over this whole ordeal then what you need will magically appear…
OK- this is the website for disciplinary action that you can take against a lawyer in ILLINOIS. Check for a similar one in your state. You can have her a_ss disbarred, what she did is unethical. This place will do a full blown investigation, and it will blow so much heat up your former lawyers a_ss that she will be hopping around trying to get you your money that is owed, for fear she will lose license to practice law. Don’t bother contacting your former lawyers office again. These guys (in your state) will handle it all, and will get results.
